Damon Dunning

damon dunning bass manDamon Dunning has been a long-time fixture and supporter of the Portland music scene.  He has lent his talents to many bands over the last 15 years, including Celilo, the Don of Division Street, and Riviera. Recently, Damon survived a major stroke while working from home in October 2014. In the brief time since the event, Damon has made major strides in his recovery; however, he still struggles with his speech, and is working through partial paralysis on the right side of his body. Doctors have estimated about a 9 to 12 month recovery time.

While having health insurance does cover some, it does not cover all.

Friends, family and fans of Damon are looking to help cover any medical and living expenses Damon has already, and will be acquiring, over the next year. Grants made to Damon will go to cover insurance deductibles, any medical costs not covered by his insurance, his plane ride home from the rehab center in Denver, CO where he is currently recovering, and any modifications to his home/car depending on any accessibility needs that may need to be addressed due to the physical effects from the stroke. It is still not known what type of final recovery can be anticipated for Damon, but we are hopeful, and he is strong-willed.

"Within a short time after moving to Portland, Damon announced that he couldn't imagine moving back to the Midwest; I confess to bittersweet acceptance, but, my happiness is directly linked to that of my children's and Oregon it would be. I hoped for him to have a family and it has been a source of comfort and delight, over the years, to know that, indeed, he does....it might not look like the Cleaver's, but Damon has a family in Portland. The Illinois branch of his tree is deeply grateful for your presence in his life and are humbled by your support and generosity." Judith Towner Dunning (mother)

To some, Damon is known as an ace bass player, to others, a tasteful guitar player, and for those fortunate enough to catch a rare solo show, he is also known as a distinctive songwriter. Damon is also known for supporting the community, taking active roles in fundraising for Ethos Music (Cover Your Hearts) and participating in a number of events for the Jeremy Wilson Foundation (The Next Waltz, several Tribute nights) for others in need. All who have been fortunate to work and play with Damon over the years can only speak highly of him as a dedicated craftsman and a sincere soul.

What Friends Family and Friends Say About Damon

“Damon is a sincere and straight from the heart human being and musician who is one of the nicest people that I’ve ever met in the Portland music scene.” – Fernando Viciconte (Musician)

“Let me begin by saying that Damon has always been my favorite brother.  He was also our other sister Paige’s favorite.  The three of us were partners in crime throughout our childhoods in a Southern Illinois river town, and we had to look no further than each other for protection and companionship. As adults, our hearts have only parted through distance and tragedy.  Thank you for being my brother’s partners and protectors.” – Tara D. Dunning  (Sister)

“As Tucker Jackson says, “Damon is the King of Groove.” In his almost three years playing with Riviera Damon provided the groove to otherwise pretty simple songs.  He always had a turn of phrase (musical and
lyrical) to add and pushed for something different. Here’s hoping he brings that same force of nature to getting back to his fighting condition.Get well soon, Double D!” -Your pals in Riviera (Band)

“One of my favorite parts of playing music with Damon were his onstage attempts at communicating with me; I say

“Damon is one of those rare people who uses his whole brain - a problem-solver, a creator, a great cook and one if the best friends anyone could ever have. Be it figuring out a work snafu, lending sage advice or helping renovate a house, making pasta or passionately performing, Damon Dunning gets it done! And when we met - at an afternoon show with Celilo - he looked at me like I was food. And I liked it.” ;) - Mara McGloughlin

attempts because they were rarely successful. I was usually on drums and he would be on bass or guitar and he would often turn to me with this incredibly intense look, eyes wide open and sort of rapidly nodding as if he was silently signaling that Jason or Freddy were right behind me and I was in great immediate mortal danger. The funny part was that I never was really clear on what he was trying to tell me; we never really talked about it and he never gave me a heads up on what certain agitated facial expressions were supposed to signal so I would generally nod and keep doing exactly what I was doing which I’m sure anyone who knows Damon would agree must have irritated the crap outta him. This is probably not one of HIS favorite memories of ME but…I always enjoyed those moments.”  – Ezra Holbrook (musician)

“Damon can always be counted on for a good story and a delicious meal.” – Pamela Rooney (musician)

“In the almost 15 years that I’ve know Damon, he has truly become not only a friend, but part of my Portland family.  Damon is flat out amazing at everything he does.  He’s an amazing home chef, an amazing musician, and an even more amazing friend!!”   – Kristie Rethlefsen (friend and fan)

“Damon is one of the friendliest, most genuine people you will ever meet. Part master chef, part rockin’ musician, and just all around awesome, I am truly lucky to be able to call him a friend.” – Aaron Masonek (musician)
